All but three of the many files had been backed up through Backup Exec. I was able to go to Backup Exec and have them restored to another folder without permissions being brought in so i can open them. These are on a VMWare machine so now I will try to figure out how to backup just a few files and see if I can restore them one more time without permissions so they become available once more.

Thank you Alex. It took a little bit of effort to find where and how to change ownership but i was finally able to do it on one of the files. I then had to log out and back in but I am now able to view it. Most importantly I was able to log in as a different user who has permissions and was able to view the file.
I have so many files involved that I do not want to go through this with all of them, so having recovered from backup will work for most of them. But the files modified after the backup can be read using this technique so I have this problem behind me now.
